where creativity becomes connection

There are people you lose in a breakup.
There are people who quietly disappear with them.
And then there are the rare few who somehow survive the wreckage.
I’ve been thinking a lot about past lives lately—not in the mystical sense, but in the way a life can split so cleanly that it feels like it belonged to someone else. Different routines. Different dreams. Different versions of yourself.
Henry belongs to one of those lives.
But his mom doesn’t.
Somehow, she crossed the bridge with me.
She became my painting mentor, but somewhere between brushes, coffee, and conversations, she also became my friend.
One of the unexpected gifts to come from a chapter that otherwise closed.
It’s funny how protective we become of the things that survive.
So much of that old life exists only in photographs now. Places I don’t visit. Stories I don’t tell as often. Memories that grow quieter every year.
But this…
This is something I don’t have to walk down memory lane to hold.
I get to keep learning from someone who knew a different version of me without asking me to become her again.
There’s something deeply comforting about that.
She doesn’t represent the past.
She represents continuity.
Proof that not everything has to be abandoned just because the chapter ended.
Sometimes life lets you keep one thread.
One friendship.
One mentor.
One person who quietly reminds you that while seasons change, kindness doesn’t have to.
And every time I paint beside her, I’m reminded that some of the best things we carry forward aren’t the plans we made.
They’re the people who choose to keep walking with us anyway.
